CRUDE 'N RUDE - Californian newcomers PUS EMULSION are the latest addition to the crop of grinding, brain-liquefying brutal death metal spawned from the San Luis Obispo area in recent years.
Platters of splatter are what's being served up on "Ensoaking Cerebral Torture" (in the fine traditions of the genre, they've made up their own word) and its four songs go straight for the jugular, clearly influenced by the early periods of American originators DEEDS OF FLESH, EXHUMED, DEVOURMENT, MEATHOOK, MORTAL DECAY, HEMDALE and the like. The odd darker bent-string riff also brings to mind modern heavyweights FETID, but on the whole, "Ensoaking..." comprises 12 twisted minutes of hammering down-blasts, satisfyingly juicy guitars and deranged low growls/gurgles all wrapped up in a rich analogue recording capturing *that* authentic, semi-lo-fi sound of the early-mid '90s, courtesy of Michael Foster from SLO locals MEPHITIC CORPSE and NECROSY ODOR. Things are a little sloppy, yes - but, like any underground freak knows, that just serves to ramp up the palpable feeling of unhinged chaos - anyone who needs their death metal quantized, scrubbed up and artificially "perfect" is a fucking wimp! Musically, there is little to fault here and all up, PUS EMULSION are off to a great start. I will say that the cover art is pretty rubbish, but hey, it's brutal death we're talkin' about here, what do you expect?! Out now on CD and CS from Headsplit Records.
