From Lima, Ohio comes DISPOSAL UNIT bringing 10 tracks of hard, embittered, despondent early 90s-rooted industrial metal on their second full length.
We all know that middle America is a blown-out, post-industrial-boom shithole with few reasons to visit or live there. Conducive to the production of such tunes as those present on this disc, DISPOSAL UNIT have taken the mood of their surroundings and put that feeling onto record, not unlike Broadrick and co. with their native Birmingham. What you get here is a slab of dejection, misery and zero semblance of hope, distilled into authentically early-mid '90s industrial metal, often bringing to mind classics like GODFLESH, PITCHSHIFTER and DEPRESSOR's early material. Amid the satisfyingly crunchy guitar that oft-alternates between mechanical chugs and harsh chords, the familiarly cold, hard Alesis SR-16 drum machine and clean and shrieked vocals, the tasteful use of textural noise is employed to great effect; that is, these sections are clearly crafted with intent and skill, instead of just rigging up a few pedals, getting a feedback loop going and hoping for the best. This aspect of the band obviously benefits from founding member Will's long history in noise, noisecore and power electronics (METHLAB EXPLOSION as an example).
I saw them earlier this year in a packed Chicago basement, and they crushed - the fucked, old, blown-out PA cranked up to hell just made 'em sound even tougher! If you dig bleak machine metal, you can't really go wrong with DISPOSAL UNIT. "78.88.98." is out now as a professionally duplicated CD-R digipak, available from the band's Bandcamp. I'd like to see this one get picked up by a label, re-released and more widely distributed and promoted.
