MIASMATIC NECROSIS (Paolo), September 2024

[Straight up - MIASMATIC NECROSIS are the kings of goregrind in the 2020s, and "Apex Profane" is unbeaten nearly four years on since release. No-one else has crafted such a record that is disgusting, heavy as hell AND memorable since the glory days of DEAD INFECTION and BILE. Read as Paolo humours my fanboyish blathering.]

RETORSION - "Élve Rohadás" CS (2024)

"LET'S DO A BAND LIKE REPULSION!" - clone bands are usually trash for obvious reasons, but when it's this well-executed and with plenty of palpable piss and rage in it, I'm all for it!

THIS IS NOT A PROMO BLOG. No review submissions are accepted.

As the title says, THIS IS NOT A PROMO BLOG and no review submissions are accepted. LIVE TO LOSE is strictly one man's bullshit and nostalgia for the good old days of Web 1.0 put up for whoever stumbles across it to see - nothing more, nothing less. Thanks for reading.

In 2024, there are no excuses for grindcore bands not putting their shit up online.

I mean, c'mon. The reasons are obvious. Well, to me at least. Here are a few.

HARM - "Con Safos" LP (2024)

"LET'S DO A BAND LIKE EXCRUCIATING TERROR!" - Los Angeles grinders HARM (standing for "Harsh.Abusive.Radioactive.Mutation.", according to Discogs) have generated somewhat of a cult name for themselves in the last few years over the course of a few live tapes, a 7" EP, a split 7" and now their debut full length.

EXHUMED KORPSE - "Spontaneous Combustion" CS (2023)

Storming out of Adelaide comes EXHUMED KORPSE, a new hard-as-nails black/death war metal entity with a grinding edge. Zero bullshit here!

DISPOSAL UNIT - "78.88.98." CD (2024)

From Lima, Ohio comes DISPOSAL UNIT bringing 10 tracks of hard, embittered, despondent early 90s-rooted industrial metal on their second full length.

FORCED STARVATION (New Zealand grindcore) - spotlight

Holy fuck, New Zealand just knows how to do it right!

Thursday, April 4, 2024

Bands - get your own website with a webstore going (not Bandcamp!). Listeners - you should be buying MP3s instead of streaming.

Oh, another anti-streaming rant? I get it, same old whinge, screaming into the void - but maybe don't scroll by this time?!

ENDLESS LOSS - "Traversing the Mephitic Artery" CD (2024)

Alright, what’s happening over in Adelaide?! That town is generating some killer shit as of late with CHARNEL ALTAR, DECREPITORUM and EXHUMED KORPSE all putting out very strong releases over the last couple of years, and now ENDLESS LOSS (don’t let the name fool you, this isn’t sad boy doom or DSBM as it may suggest) lay waste to wimpy shit with their debut full length album of incredibly dense, churning, EVIL DEATH METAL.

Tickets for small shows - fuck off!

I'm definitely not the first to raise this, but it shits the hell out of me, so I'm gonna rant about how small local shows mostly being ticketed is bullshit.

GRINDCORE and the trend of shorter-than-ever releases.

Alright, so it's 2024 and for better or worse, there are shitloads of grind and gore releases coming out every month. That isn't what this rant is about, though - the target of today's whinge is the trend (hell, it's just the norm now) of newer bands releasing ever-shorter records, and why that's just no good.

SIN / SPINE WRENCH - "No Rest For The Wicked" split CD (1992)

SIN, made up of members from NAUSEA (NY), CATTLE PRESS and IABHORHER [well, I just gave away that this is gonna be good!] bring the superior side of the split with four tracks/23 minutes of miserable, oppressive industrial metal mostly heavily reminiscent of GODFLESH circa 1988, with some nods to early SWANS.

DOME RUNNER – "Apocalypse.Pulse.Worship." 12"/CD (2024)

A fresh release from Finland's DOME RUNNER is welcome news to me! Following on from their strong debut album, "Conflict State Design", "Apocalypse.Pulse.Worship." brings five tracks of grimy, rusted-out, wasteland industrial metal, with a remix topping it off.

BISTURI - "S/T" discography compilation CD (2022)

From Spain comes brutal old school grinders BISTURI! This compilation brings together everything released so far, from 2016-2022, covering all their standalone releases, splits and a live set.

PULMONARY FIBROSIS - "Pulmonologists" CD (2022)

France's ever-prolific gorehounds PULMONARY FIBROSIS are back with another sloshing, slashing and totally septic full length!

LOBOTOMY DEPT - "New World Coma" CD (2017)

If the first thing you'd said to me about LOBOTOMY DEPT was that it was a Rogga Johansson project, I'd not have bothered checking it out at all, given the fact that the dude has absolutely zero quality control and shits out a new record seemingly every other week. However, "New World Coma" is some solid and HARD industrial thrash that's clearly very heavily influenced by greats of years past like NAILBOMB, GODFLESH's straight-forward elements, PITCHSHIFTER when they were serious business instead of klowny, and late '80s/early '90s death/thrash ala SEPULTURA.

HEMORRHOID - "Raw Materials of Decay" CD (2024)

Can you really go wrong with Portland, OR death/grind? Not in my book! Chucked up from the bowels of America's anti-vax cooker state comes the full length that'll make your guts churn and brain dribble out your ears.

FERAL FORMS - "Premalignant" CS (2023)

Blasting out of Italy comes FERAL FORMS, a new ripping death/black metal entity that is an excellent antidote to all the snooze-worthy, boring-as-shit OSDM getting around now.

CORPUS OFFAL - "Demo 2024" (2024)

For once, my inherent skepticism of anything "OSDM"-branded from the last, I dunno, 8-10 years or so was misplaced here!

Reviews circa 2009-2016 (ACID FEAST, MODORRA, ENTETY, HAUNTED, MEATAL ULCER + more)

*[Back in 2015/16, Terrible Mutilation started as a would-be print zine. I had a bunch of reviews and interviews done, but it never materialised. Fast forward 8-9 years - I found these while clearing out an old hard drive, and thought "why not just chuck 'em up online?". So, here's what would have made up the reviews for issue #1. Most were written around 2015/16, but some were from a few years earlier, maybe even 2009/10... enjoy!]*
